Joe DeRing

Founder & President

Joe is a true American hero. Having served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, Joe returned from service seeking to use his leadership skills in a way that would allow him to contribute to society. Partnering with advisors Dev Pathik and Jason Clement, Joe developed Empower Leadership Sports in Middletown Connecticut. The center and Joe’s incredible personal journey from battlefield to inspirational adventure operator has now been featured on CNN, FOX, and numerous other media outlets across the U.S.

Chief Development Officer

Dev has owned, operated, and overseen the opening of more than 40 challenge courses, zip lines, and adventure based operations and his consulting and management companies have directed the planning and management of hundreds of community-based recreation and sports complexes in locations around the world. Dev has led adventure expeditions in the Amazon, Vietnam, Patagonia, the American West, Thailand, and numerous other locations.

Jason Clement

Chief Financial Officer

Jason is a licensed architect and a nationally recognized sports facility finance and management expert. His consulting and management companies have directed the planning and management of hundreds of community-based recreation and sports complexes in locations around the world. Jason is a driven endurance athlete who has competed in a wide range of obstacle and road races and triathlons. His extensive travels have led him to Africa, Europe, Latin America, and numerous other locations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does it take to complete the Treetop Zip Tour?

Plan to spend 2.5 hours with us. The Treetop Zip Tour is approximately 2 hours in length plus additional time for check in, orientation, training, etc.

Do you operate in the rain?

Yes, we operate in the rain. However, the course will be closed if there is lightening activity in the area. We will also close for high winds. If we know in advance that we will be closed, we will try to contact you at the contact number you provide to us when you book your tour. If your tour is canceled due to weather, you can either rebook for another time, or we will refund your tour cost.

How do I get the pictures my guide was taking during the tour?

The digital pictures cost $25/reservation. Following your tour, Empower will send you a digital link to download your pictures.

Do you offer military or senior discounts?

Yes, We offer a 10% discount for Military members and Seniors (65 years or older). Reservations must be made over the phone and proper ID is required when you check in for your tour or the discount will no longer apply.

How can I pay? What if I do not want to pay with a credit card?

You can pay by room charge through the resort, cash, check or credit card.

Who can and cannot zip?

The Treetop Zip Tour is designed for use by participants of average mobility and strength, and who are in reasonably good health. No children weighing less than 70 pounds will be allowed to participate in our zip line adventure tour. Children between the ages of 7 to 15 must be accompanied to the facility by an adult. For safety’s sake, participants for the zip line canopy tour must weigh between 70 and 270 pounds. Please call if you have any questions regarding weight limits. For additional information or questions please call our office at 540-692-9471. The Kiddo Zip Line Adventure is available for children under 70lbs and under 7 years of age. Kiddos riding the Kiddo Zip Line must be accompanied by an adult.

What if I am afraid of heights?

It is not uncommon to have a fear of heights. Many people who have a fear of heights are still able to enjoy our Treetop Zip Tour. You will be safely secured to our steel cable at all times when you are off the ground. Our professional guides are thoroughly trained in zip line adventure course procedures, and will be with you throughout the entire course to answer all your questions and provide support.

How much do I tip my guides?

Our guides are professionally trained to ensure that you have an educational, enjoyable, and memorable experience. The tipping guideline is the industry standard of $5-$10 per person.

Are reservations required?

Reservations are required. Each one of our tour groups is limited to 10 participants and requires two guides. To enable us to provide you with the best experience, we require a reservation for all participants. If you do not have a reservation we will do our best to accommodate you on a space available basis. If you do not show up with the total # of people you have reserved spots for, you are still responsible for paying for those spots.

Online reservations will be charged a 6% booking fee. This booking fee only applies to online reservations.

What should I wear?

You will need to wear close-toed shoes (such as tennis shoes). Wear comfortable clothing, but please avoid loose accessories (no scarves, etc.). Long hair needs to be tied back. Women should not wear skirts. Dress for the weather. We do operate in the rain, so please be prepared. Please do not wear any dangling jewelry. Also, please remove all things from your pockets, such as cell phones and wallets. You don’t want them falling out during the tour. We do not have a secure place to store your valuables, so please leave valuables at home or locked in your car. Empower Adventures is not responsible for property lost, damaged, or stolen during your tour.

How safe is it?

All adventure activities done above the ground carry certain inherent risks. We have taken numerous steps to mitigate these risks. Our course was built to exceed ACCT professional building standards. Our guides are professionally trained and our equipment is very high quality. The course and equipment are inspected daily.

How long is the zip line course?

The zip line adventure course spans over 20 acres, consisting of 5 zip lines ranging from 275 to 670 feet in length as well as 2 adventure sky bridges.

How high off the ground will I be?

During the tour you will be anywhere from 35 to 65 feet off the ground.
